My full day in Penang starts out with a little breakfast at my guest house, which I loved but forgot to take pictures of.
Someone else's pic. Good shot of main hangout area.
It's a renovated piece of a colonial era mansion, but sort of a chopped off/ chopped up piece, so none of the molding matches up and some of the rooms lack windows, but the high ceilings remain and the central hang out room is amazing. I stayed in the dorm which was clean, neat, and with good AC though no windows. At 15 ringgit a night ($4.25) I start to realize I was getting not so great a deal at the previous places. Also a fun group of people, my first really good "hostel" experience here since the other places were mostly vacant. Got to share stories and get advice from other travelers. Met two other girls traveling on their own. Rock!
Main excursion of the day was to a tropical fruit farm in the northwest-ish part of the island. Saw all kinds of fruits and ended with a fruit tasting feast and possibly the most delicious glass of juice ever. You got to pick your ingredients. I had pineapple and mango and it tasted like sunshine!

Have lots of pics to show but the connection is slow here so can only share a couple for now.
After that it's late in the day (taking public transport everywhere which really sucks time but is worth it for the people watching) and perfect to head up Penang Hill to get a glimpse of George Town at sunset. Took a funicular up the hill! For some reason I imagined it would shoot up but it sort of chugs along at about 5 miles an hour. Next time I do this there better be skiing at the top.
Pictures to come!
Have delicious (and spicy) chick pea mixture snack. See a tame python some guys use for tourist pictures and express too much interest in it and they decide to feed it a live pigeon just for me, to give me the privelege of seeing it in action. Not exactly what I had in mind. Didn't actually stay for the show, and lost out double -- offended the guys and made an extra pigeon dinner. Oh well, I guess the snake was happy...
Make it back to George Town pretty late, but finally found my thosai, which was kind of like a thicker fluffier crepe (not yet a pancake though) that you can get filled with stuff. I had mine filled with masala, and they give you a couple sauces to dip it in. Delicious!! Unfortunately did not get a picture.
It's so nice to hear that you found some other travelers!! Are you going to travel around together?? It sounds like you're having a really great time and that makes me super happy. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd all of the pics are beautiful!...I realize I'm such a slacker on my blog. Shame on me!

Char- I had mangosteen when I was in Vietnam. It's soooo tasty! I always love that stuff. I don't know if I've ever had lemondrop mangosteen though. It sounds like you're having a fun time exploring Asia. Can't wait to see you in June!
